Multimeter

Wednesday 29 February 2012

Multimeter:

By using the multimeter & setting up some Series & Parallel circuit's & also on cars we were able to test the over all Amps, Volts, Ohms & find the problems within the vehicle. Multimeter's are very easy to blow if you are unsure on how to use one.

  • Amps - which is to measure the over all current draw/ how many Amps is getting pulled through the circuit. Which should be close to 0.0 as possible.
  • To the right is a diagram showing how to measure Amps.

  • Volts - Volt meter test is to test the charging rate, which should be charging around 14.0 or close as possible
  • The diagram on the left showing how to measure Volts.

  • Ohms - which is to measure the resistance between two components.
  • The higher the resistance the harder it will be for the current to flow giving you less current & the lower the resistance the bigger the current.
  •  On the right the diagram shows how you would measure the resistance using the multimeter as a Ohmmeter.

Using multimeter's:

    • Here we have set up a series circuit and using the multimeter measured the voltage after each component in the circuit.
    • The voltage has dropped from 12v

    • Testing the diodes on the rectifier of the alternator

I have down loaded a pic from Google images that shows some of the settings on a basic Multimeter
When using a multimeter you have to make sure you have it on the right setting & have the common & the positive lead plug in right.
