Starter Motor Parts

Thursday 15 March 2012

 Starter Motor:

  • Pinion Gear (Clutch) - Is a carbon ring fitted with teeth, that is pushed forward to engage with the flywheel.

    • Armature - When the copper contacts are generated with power, a magnetic field is generated around the Armature. The left side of the Armature is pushed away from the left and pulled towards the right. Causing rotation.

    • The solenoid - can receive a large electrical current from the car battery & a small current from the ignition switch. When the solenoid receives the electrical current it then creates a magnetic field.

    • The plunger - reacts with the magnetic field pushing the return spring forward to activate the Leaver / Shift Fork.

    • The Leaver ( Shift Fork ) - is operated by the plunger. Once the plunger makes contact with the return spring, it then engages the leaver to push the pinion gear forward, engaging this to the flywheel.

    • The Field Winding ( Field Coils ) - Is stationary windings that creates a strong magnetic field around the armature. The current flows through the windings & becomes very large. Acting against the magnetic field created by the armature, this spins the motor faster.

    • Connected to the top of the solenoid casing is the (b+)
    • Ignition connection
    • The third connection send current through to the armature.
